No Adobe Flash support for Android 4.0, yet

22 Nov, 2011, 4:54 pm IST | by Roydon Cerejo | Software

With Google’s Ice Cream Sandwich pronounced as the bringer of unity between the mobile phone and tablet space, there’s one gaping hole in that long list of features. The Google Nexus will not support the Adobe Flash plug-in for browsers and this is not a hardware limitation but more of a software one. Adobe’s current version of the player does not support Ice Cream Sandwich or Android 4.0, as of now. Adobe should be releasing an update for the player towards the end of the year.

Making a fashionably late entrance

Adobe did mention that the next version of Flash for mobile devices may be the last one, which indirectly means, Android 5.0 or JellyBean will not be getting Flash support. This feature was one of the biggest feathers in Android's hat over the iPad and it’s only a matter of time before it’s dropped. The future is HTML5, and Adobe is focusing heavily on that right now. The company will continue to support Flash content on mobile devices for developers through Adobe AIR. It’s good to see Adobe jumping onboard and move with the tide rather than trying to fight it.
