Research: Windows Phone to overtake iOS by 2015

It might seem unlikely but research firms IDC and Gartner are placing bets that Microsoft Windows Phone 7 will overtake Apple iOS platform in market share by 2015. Android is likely to be number 1 at that point in time. These reports were released in the last couple of months. The rise in popularity is likely to come from manufacturers building phones based on their platform. According to Gartner, by 2015, Windows Phones are likely to make up for 19.5 of the market share, while iOS will slowly drop to 17.2 percent. Android will have a very healthy lead over both platforms at 48.8 percent market share.

Nokia should return to glory with their new-born partnership with Microsoft likely to bear fruit. Symbian’s collapse is unstoppable as market share for the defunct OS will drop to close to nil. The Microsoft-Nokia tieup will not help it reach levels that were one achieved by Symbian though. The move to QNX across devices should also help RIM, but it won’t be able to battle the likes of Windows Phone and iOS. Apple on the hand, which is doing well will see some changes in the speed of growth, which should level out in the years to come.
