WebP to Compress Images is Here

Heavy images that take ages to download may soon become a thing of the past. Search engine giant, Google is now dabbling with easing out heavy image download woes, and has come up with WebP, an image format that will be lighter than standard file formats.

Spot the difference....

Based on the same idea that prompted Google to introduce WebM, WebP would slice off a major chunk of the image without affecting even an iota of its sharpness. According to a post on the Chromium blog that announced the introduction of WebP, unlike earlier where image needed to be downloaded entirely in order to view the files, the files can be viewed even before it has been downloaded.
   
At the moment, however, WebP is active only for Chrome and Opera users. But, considering how promising this software seems, it might not be long before it will appear on various other browsers, too.
