At a time where companies are pushing for quick adoption of SSDs, OCZ has decided to strengthen their SSD business by acquiring Indilinx, a South Korean company that specializes in SSD controllers. The SSD controller other than the memory itself is extremely vital to the performance of the drive. This move will strengthen its position in the SSD market which been simmering over the last year or two. It should also help OCZ expand into other areas of the market such as embedded technologies, mobiles, tablets, industrial solutions and of course, laptops and desktop PCs. Is OCZ headed towards SSD dominance?
OCZ uses SandForce controllers on its current SSDs and is said to continue to use them even the acquisition. Indilinx controllers have also been in use on the PCIe based SSDs that OCZ started selling around the year 2008. Indilinx will be acquired for an approximate $32 million worth of OCZ stocks, after which Indilinx shareholders should have a 9.5 per cent shares in OCZ. All the necessary formalities should be completed in around a month’s time. |
