Nokia officially states Symbian Carla is still on the cards

It was reported that a product manager from Nokia had mentioned that the brand would not be issuing major updates, any more to their Symbian operating system. Many people were speculating that the reason for this was that the Symbian platform was not faring as well as expected and Nokia was instead paving the way for ushering in their Lumia branded handsets running on the Windows Phone platform. This fact did not sit too well with Symbian loyalists and many spoke against this move across various blogs and websites. However, just when it appeared that all was lost for the Symbian platform and that it had reached the fag end of its run, GSMArena contacted Nokia and now according to reports, Symbian Carla is still on its way.

Carla was the codename for Belle Feature Pack 1

As per the report, “A couple of days ago we ran a story that stated the Carla update for Nokia Belle has been cancelled. However, we have now been contacted by Nokia regarding this matter, stating that this is not the case at all.” They go on to state that Carla is basically a codename provided for Symbian Belle Feature Pack 1. The report adds, “According to the Nokia employee who spoke to us, the Carla update, or Belle FP1 as it will be known as, is not cancelled and will start rolling out shortly. The first phone to run on this update will be the upcoming Nokia 808 PureView and soon some of the existing Nokia devices, which includes the Nokia 700, 701 and 603, will be updated to Belle FP1.” However, some devices such as the N8 and E7 will not receive this update, but will instead receive an operating system update known as Nokia Belle Refresh.

From the looks of it, the brand still has plans in place for launching handsets running on the Symbian OS and it appears that maybe Symbian Donna is also on the cards. For more information on Symbian Belle Feature Pack 1, click here.
