Budget Android tablets are a dime a dozen these days. It all started with 7-inch models from known brands such as Reliance, Micromax and Mercury. And now, we have similar offerings by previously unheard of brands such as Wishtel and Wicked Leak. Delhi-based Champion Computers has joined the league of budget Android tablet makers with the 7-inch Wtab 7.2. It’s priced very aggressively at Rs. 4,899, and comes with a 1 year warranty. ![]() Champion Computers ICS tablet Wtab 7.2 launched
The Wtab 7.2 is powered by the 1.5 GHz Cortex A8 processor and 512 MB of RAM to run Android Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) smoothly. Like its rivals it offers 4 GB of storage space for apps and media. The storage space can be expanded by up to 32 GB via a microSD card. The touchscreen display is capacitive, and sports a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels, which is pretty standard in the segment. Wtab 7.2 doesn’t feature a SIM card slot and voice calling support, but you can hook up a 3G USB dongle to stay connected while on the go. Many of the budget Android tablets face compatibility issues with 3G dongles. To make things easy, Champion Computers offers its own brand of dongles called ‘WConnect’, which is compatible with the Wtab 7.2. In addition to 3G, there’s a built-in Wi-Fi adapter to stay connected while in hotspots. A 1MP front-facing camera is present for making video calls. The rated battery life of this tablet is around 5 hours, and at 320 grams, it’s one of the lightest in its class.
Kapil Wadhwa, MD, Champion Computers, said, “The market today is flooded with cheap tablets with questionable quality. Our strategy is not to launch the cheapest tablet but an affordable device with quality and superior performance that delights customers”. The Wtab 7.2 is one of the very few models priced under Rs. 5,000. Whether it will be able to beat its more popular rivals is another matter. For example, many 7-inch Android tablets feature HDMI output, which the Wtab 7.2 lacks. Also, unlike some tablets such as the Micromax Funbook, the Wtab 7.2 doesn’t have buttons for Home, Menu and Back on the frame, which would have made access easier. Instead, they are placed on the sides and this has been done to keep the screen frame slim which lends a more compact form.
Champion Computers also has the Wtab 7.1 to offer. Priced at Rs. 5,999, it’s more expensive than its sibling by a grand. For the difference, you get buttons on the frame and an HDMI port. However, it’s a tad heavier due to the extra bulk around screen.
Champion has launched the Wtab 7.2 at a time when the market is already flooded with its likes. Nevertheless, it has potential to gain some market share thanks to its attractive price point. If your budget for an Android tablet is Rs. 5,000, and HDMI output is not a priority, you know where to look. The Wtab 7.2 is already available at electronics showrooms and online retail stores. |
