Computex 2012: Samsung showcases Series 5 Hybrid PC

| by Karan Shah | Tablets

This year’s Computex, so far has been full of Windows 8 tablets, Ultrabooks and All in Ones. After Asus and Acer strutting about with their stuff in full glory, we’ve got South Korean manufacturer, Samsung getting their own Windows 8 device ready. The Series 5 Hybrid PC, as it is called, is Samsung’s version of the Transformer tablet with a keyboard dock. It comes with an 11-inch display and though it looks pretty similar to the other offerings at the exhibition, it’s got a neat little trick of attaching the slate magnetically to the dock. Engadget reports that, “The Hybrid is rated for 10 hours of battery life and has a pair of 2- and 8-megapixel cameras. It also supports pen input, and will come bundled with the same S-Pen and S-Memo software used on the Galaxy Note 10.1 (but modified for Windows, of course).

Another bit of difference in the hardware section is that this will be an x86 PC, as it will be running Windows 8 and not Windows RT, which is slated to run on ARM. There are chances that it could be running an Intel Clover Trail CPU, with a 1080p display, a SIM slot, a microSD card slot and a USB port. As this is an early version of the model, there are high chances that these rumoured specs could change in the near future.

This new genre of Windows 8 slates are looking to usher in a new genre of tablets cum Ultrabooks with the keyboard dock and touch functionality. Coupled with the productivity superiority of Windows, they definitely will pose a formidable fight against the Android and the iOS devices. Also, it’s important to note that the Galaxy Note’s popular S-pen functionality will be a part of this device, which may further accentuate its appeal and demand amongst the masses. As far as specs, pricing and availability of Samsung’s Series 5 Hybrid PC is concerned, stay tuned to this space for more details.

Till then, a Clover Trail running Samsung Series 5 Hybrid PC – at what price would you buy it?
