Gartner, the technology research specialist, predicts that the popularity of tablets would touch new heights in the times to come . Although firm on his prediction, Gartner adds that the worldwide PC shipments will grow by 13.6 per cent in 2012 to 440.6 million units, but these figures are a cut-down from an earlier estimated growth of 14.8 per cent. According to Ranjit Chatwal, Research Director at Gartner, China was the weak zone in terms of PC sales and hence the cut-down in the forecast. However, Atwal's colleague, George Shiffler believes that there's more to the slashed figures, than just weaker sales in China. Apparently, tablets are eating up the market that belonged to PCs and laptops. Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook, who met with analysts at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. last week, said that tablet sales will eventually surpass those of personal computers. The growth, he added, will come mostly at the expense of netbooks, a category of smaller and inexpensive laptops that can handle basic tasks like Web surfing and e-mail. PCs too, are being increasingly considered inadequate as compared to the latest technology available. New PCs launched in the second quarter will have more competition . This, in addition to the battery life of each of the products has become the bone of contention. It now remains to be a 'wait and watch' scenario as consumer behavior is gauged. |
