Google may have sold 1 million Nexus 7 tablets already

| by Aaron Almeida | Tablets

The Google Nexus 7 is arguably one of the most popular tablets to have graced the tablet market. An analyst now claims that as many as 1 million Nexus 7 devices have been sold since its inception.

As per a report by ZDNet, in a research note by Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster, the analyst states, “We believe Google's Other Income of $666 (compared to Street at $477) suggests that Google likely sold 800k-1m Nexus 7s in Q3. Excluding our estimated Nexus 7 impact, core net revenues would have been up 2.5 percent q/q vs. 4.7 percent.”

Announced at the Google I/O 2012 event, the Google Nexus 7 tablet is not just designed to take on Apple’s highly successful iPad, but it will also pose a stiff threat to the Amazon Kindle Fire. Google aims to tackle the competition better with its pricing strategy of this Asus-manufactured tablet.

Is it enough to take on the budget tablet segment?

1 million units possibly sold

The Google Nexus 7 tablet is available in two storage capacities, which are 8GB and 16GB, and the brand has priced them extremely competitively at $199 and $249 respectively. Google has added a lot of high-end hardware to the mix, and has kept the price down to a minimum by pricing it at $199 for the base model.

The Google Nexus 7 is available in India on a couple of online sites. We had earlier reported that Indiatimes Shopping had the tablet in stock and had priced the Nexus 7 at Rs 16,952. EMI options were available on the retail website as well.

The 7-inch tablet measures 198.5 x 120 x 10.5mm, and weighs 340 grams. These dimensions allow it to go head-to-head with the Amazon Kindle Fire. The Google Nexus 7 will be the first device running on Google’s latest operating software, which is Android v4.1 (Jelly Bean).

The 7-inch flagship tablet co-manufactured by Asus is a tablet doing well in the market. It is Wi-Fi only, and a 3G variant is speculated to be on its way. Apart from the two models (8GB and 16GB) currently available in the market, there have been rumours that Google and Asus would be releasing a 32GB variant of the device as well. This model is believed to be sold, when released at the same price as the 16GB variant.

Japanese customer, who had ordered a 16GB model received a 32GB version, posted a picture of the tablet online with the storage capacity shown. This apparent faux pas has backed the rumours of a 32GB Google Nexus 7 tablet.

The 32GB Nexus 7 may be officially unveiled at the Android event, which is scheduled to take place in the next few days.
