Hackers jailbreak PlayBook, RIM claims it's secure

01 Dec, 2011, 3:42 pm IST | by Anuradha Shetty | Tablets

If proved true, then this bit of news will prove to be a major blow to RIM's attempts to regain trust with its users, which it had faltered in keeping up on during the brief outage of its services recently. A YouTube video (embedded below) confirms the claims of some hackers, who're stating that they have successfully managed to jailbreak the PlayBook tablet, and have managed to access unauthorized applications. RIM, on their part are still investigating if these claims hold any water, and will fix them if they are true.

Even as investigations are on to see if indeed the tablet's security had been compromised, Crackberry reports that RIM issued a statement clearly stating that the PlayBook tablet is secure and the jailbreak claims are false. It stated, "The term 'jailbreaking' is commonly used to describe altering the software on a smartphone or tablet in order to obtain access to systems or applications not officially authorized or distributed by the manufacturer. BlackBerry smartphone users are not affected. RIM is currently investigating this claim and has been in contact with one of the security researchers to discuss it."

However, if these claims turn true, then RIM and its claims on security will come under the scanner, which is not something that RIM would want, moreso now when they're trying to bring back the magic! Worryingly though, a report in Bloomberg states that these hackers will also release a tool to jailbreak the PlayBook.
