Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 priced at $649 onwards

| by Aaron Almeida | Tablets

Lenovo unveiled a tablet called the ThinkPad Tablet 2 in August. This tablet runs on the Windows 8 Pro operating system. Now, Lenovo has announced that the starting price for this model is $649, which roughly translates to Rs 34,200.

The Thinkpad Tablet 2 will succeed the currently available Thinkpad Tablet, which runs on an ARM processor and Android OS. As reported by Engadget, the tablet will include a 1366 x 768 IPS display, a 64GB solid state drive, 2GB of RAM, a battery with 10 hours of battery life, optional 3G/ 4G, micro-HDMI output, 2MP and 8MP dual cameras, NFC, a fingerprint reader, and an Ethernet jack. The tablet will pack all of these within a thickness of 9.8mm, and will weigh around 589 grams. The tablet will run on the new 32nm Atom processors (codenamed Clover Trail) that are optimised for use in tablets. The ThinkPad Tablet 2 will feature a stylus, an optional dock, and an optional ThinkPad-style keyboard complete with TrackPoint nub.

As the tablet runs on the x86 architecture, it will support all x86-compatible applications. This capability will enable it to run standard Windows applications, making the Tablet2 a worthy opponent to the Apple iPad, which is currently the market leader in this segment.

The ThinkPad Tablet 2 weighs 580 grams, and also includes an optional digitiser, and pen for precision input. It offers 3G wireless connectivity. This tablet supports multi-finger touch support, pen input or the ability to connect to the optional ThinkPad Tablet 2 keyboard, and dock for a PC-like computing experience. Lenovo claims that the ThinkPad Tablet 2 includes a host of IT manageability, security, and corporate-level service and support to help IT managers easily deploy it in their business environments.

The original Thinkpad Tablet came with the Honeycomb OS, and featured advanced security tools such as data encryption, corporate email, digitiser pen, integrated cloud sharing, and some built-in productivity apps such as Documents-to-go and PrinterShare. The Thinkpad Tablet was launched in India in three versions: the Wi-Fi only version for Rs 29,500, the 32GB 3G one for Rs 41,900, and 64GB 3G version for Rs 46,900.

The specifications of the original Thinkpad Tablet are:

  • Android 3.1 Honeycomb running on a 1GHz Tegra 2 processor
  • 10.1-inch IPS capacitive touchscreen (Gorilla glass) with a 800 x 1280 pixel resolution
  • 3G, EDGE/GPRS, Wi-Fi
  • GPS with A-GPS Support
  •  Bluetooth and USB 2.0
  • Up to 32GB internal storage, Memory expandable via microSD card reader
