Notion Ink to not compromise battery life for an HD display

Earlier this year, Notion Ink had announced that they had partnered with Texas Instruments (TI) for their next generation Adam II Tablets. During the time of the announcement, they had revealed the features that would be thrown in the upcoming slate. The brand’s first attempt at a tablet had not done rather well and hence, the second time around, Notion Ink has thrown in features from Texas Instruments, like Wi-Link 7.0 and Phoenix Audio Amplifiers. Apart from this, it will also be running on Google’s latest mobile operating software, Android Ice Cream Sandwich, making it quite a tasty treat when the tablet does get unveiled. However, the brand has now posted on their blog about what their upcoming tablet will not include.

Battery life extremely important

As per a post by Rohan Shravan, speaking on the display and battery, “It’s something we dwelled on while finalizing the specifications for the upcoming Adam. The option we had was 1920×1200 in 10 inch for the same thickness. Only thing which was to be handled was to move the LCD driving circuit to the main mother board, which was also in favor of what we wanted to do since we have a very special VEE (Visual Enhancement Engine) for controlling the display. But, there were 2 problems, power requirement and availability of the apps to run on such a resolution.”

Elaborating on the above mentioned problems, he states that their specifications would want the Adam II tablets to be charged in under 2.5 hours, or so with a 25Whr battery that would mean 2A on 5V. He goes on to state, “First, it can be charged with a normal laptop drawing around 500mA (using a micro USB cable). Second, any mobile charger with mirco-USB charger can charge it. And third, leads to reduction in number of components. Micro-USB charging is much closer to EU’s charging specifications.”

He ends by stating that screens with higher resolution are there on their roadmap; but not as of right now. He says that instead of bumping up the battery to support higher res screen, they would rather focus on how to cut the battery even further to support a higher resolution screen.
