Nvidia Tegra 3 to debut in Asus Transformer 2

Tegra 3 should've been here by now, but it’s very clear that it has been delayed for unknown reasons. Perhaps Nvidia are not able to get a good yield out of the first batch of silicon or they are waiting to launch it with a product. Out of the two, the second scenario is the more likely one as Meetgadget has confirmed from multiple sources that Asus’s Transformer 2 tablet is currently in the works and will be the first tablet to sport this new chip. In case you didn’t know, Tegra 3 (codenamed Kal El) will be the first quad-core processor for ultra portable devices like tablets and cell phones.

The earlier rumour about Asus prepping the tablet for a September launch may just be true, after all. Jonney Shih, chairman of Asus, did mention that the announcement would be 'impressive', and since there’s no word on any other big product launching from their stable, it all the more points to the Transformer 2. If this happens, it will be interesting to see how Asus manages to market both the tablets.

First thoughts of a quad-core on a mobile device immediately points towards poor battery life. However, Nvidia claim that Kal El will actually be more power efficient than Tegra 2. More tablets and phones will follow, but mostly next year itself.
