RIM delays PlayBook update; shipping without messenger

26 Oct, 2011, 12:27 pm IST | by Shayne Rana | Tablets

Research in Motion said the software upgrade for its PlayBook tablet has been delayed to February next year. It seems that even with the software update though, the tablet will ship without the Blackberry messenger (BBM)software, the company said in a blog post on its website. Their reasoning behind the delay, according to the blog was this - As much as we’d love to have it in your hands today, we’ve made the difficult decision to wait to launch BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 until we are confident we have fully met the expectations of our developers, enterprise customers and end-users. And here’s what we’re doing to accomplish that.

Update 2.0 delayed!

The PlayBook has been criticised because it cannot handle email routed through its secure enterprise servers without being linked to a BlackBerry, said Reuters. Earlier this month, RIM had said it plans to introduce the BBX operating software for the BlackBerry smartphone and PlayBook tablet, but did not say when the software would show up in a product. Considering their recent outage situation that could have potenatially cost them a lot more than what was felt, one would think RIM would be gearing up to make a big splash to further regain thier loyal followers trust. The PlayBook hasn't been faring all that well and this delay does not help. Unless BlackBerry has a Dove up it's sleeve, February could be big trouble for RIM if the 2.0 PlayBook update fails to impress. Stay Tuned.
