Bharti Airtel Ltd., India's top mobile operator, said on Thursday it had received a letter of offer from the Sri Lankan telecom regulator to provide 2G and 3G mobile services in the island nation. "The south Asian region offers tremendous growth opportunities and Sri Lanka is a very promising market for telecom services," Bharti Chairman Sunil Mittal said in a statement. The deal would be Bharti Airtel's first foreign venture. Bharti Global, a subsidiary of group company Bharti Enterprises, has been operating in Seychelles and has also received licenses to operate 2G and 3G services in Jersey and Guernsey in Europe, it said. Earlier, Bharti Airtel said it saw capital expenditure at $2 billion for the financial year ending March 2007. Ahead of the news, shares in Bharti Airtel ended up 0.9 percent at 672.85 rupees in a firm Mumbai market. |
