Mobile technology has been put to unique use in Haryana—sorting out agriculture-related problems of farmers. A short messaging service (SMS) introduced for the state's farmers by the agriculture department's Kisan call centre February 2007 has become a hit with farmers. Principal secretary, agriculture, S.P. Sharma said Sunday that over 800 farmers had sent their queries through the SMS service and had been sent replies by concerned officials and agriculture scientists. The free-of-cost SMS service is available to farmers on mobile number 99158-62026. Of the SMSes received, 559 were related to problems of agriculture, 192 to horticulture, four to fisheries, two for forestry and three for animal husbandry. Concerned officials were giving the replies to these problems to the farmers telephonically within 24 to 48 hours. |
