Anil Ambani-led Reliance Communications (RCOM) Friday got formal approval for additional radio waves which will enable it to roll out pan India mobile phones services using GSM technology. RCOM, which has a nationwide presence in rival CDMA technology, had been offering GSM mobile phone services in eight circles of West Bengal, Kolkata, North-East, Assam, Bihar, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh. "Reliance Communications, India's largest Integrated Telecom Service provider, has received start-up spectrum to launch nationwide GSM services under its existing Unified Access Service License (UASL)," the Anil Ambani-promoted telecom firm said in a statement late Friday evening. "The grant of GSM Spectrum to Reliance Communications in 14 circles reaffirms the company's stance on UASL being a Technology Neutral license," it added. This comes a day after Communications and IT Minister A. Raja announced the allotment of spectrum or radio waves to some of the existing telecom operators and issued letters of intent (LoIs) to new entrants such as Unitech and STel. It also gave LoIs to Tata Teleservices, Loop Telecom (owned by BPL), Spice Communication, Shyam Telelink, Swan Telecom, Datacom and Idea Cellular. |
