Google has been working on multiple projects at the same time, everything from mobile platforms to desktop operating systems to web services. One web service that could technically benefit a number of their solutions would be an online storage service. A few years back, some developers created a software called GMail Drive, which allowed users to store data on their Gmail accounts. However, this wasn’t supported by Google and it never really caught up. There were rumours that Google was working on their own system called Google Drive as competition to Dropbox, a popular online storage service. It looks like those rumours may be true. The latest news comes from TechCrunch. A consultant, Johannes Wigand noticed on screen for a few seconds something that resembles GDrive. Coming to a device near you
The screenshot shows a service that has a section called My Google Drive. While Google Docs really is just like Google Drive, it only allows formats usable in Google Docs. Whenever Google Drive does launch, it should allow pretty much every format, out there. Being able to access and transfer data between your mobile phone, tablet, notebook and desktop should be seamless. Google’s Chromebooks also should benefit from this system. Going by Google’s tradition of offering more for free, there’s probably going to be more than 5GB available for free and may be some paid schemes for additional capacity. |
