Creepy: An App that Can Locate You with Your Picture

04 Apr, 2011, 5:26 pm IST | by Anuradha Shetty | Web services

This new app doing rounds may not interest you; it may not till you know that it can locate you right down to your doorstep using geotags from the photo you just uploaded!

Creepy, indeed!

Creepy indeed!

You read that right! An app called Creepy that’s currently available as a free software package to Windows and Linux users. The app, once installed, can almost immediately locate you using the geographic data embedded in the embed code of the photos.

The app begins its play almost as soon as it is installed. Once there, all the user has to do is enter a person’s Flickr or Twitter username and click on ‘Geolocate Target’. The app then gets down to accumulating all the available information with the help of the photos shared. The working of this app is too simple to freak someone out. However, the creator of this app, Yiannis Kakavas believes that this app will do more good than harm. It will make people wary about their online activities, and instill a level of discipline in them.

Creepy for many will be a reminder of a website called ‘I can stalk you’ that worked on similar lines. Users, however, just need to be a little more careful when they upload their pictures on such sites. If apps like Creepy scare you, then there are loads of sites that can strip off geotags and make it impossible for mischief mongers to get your details.
