According to various tweets on #egypt, the internet is back in the country. Egypt had been without internet, effectively living in darkness for 5 straight days following which the country was riled in protests. In addition to internet, cell phone and SMS abilities were also taken away. The only way the country could communicate was via landlines. Of course, foreign organizations like Google and Twitter came to the rescue, as well as people took to dial-up to access internet somehow. Back in action
The country is now connected again with the odd complaint that some texts and calls aren't going through. Websites like www.egypt.gov.eg have been up for the past two hours. The return comes from the Egyptian army's encouragement of protesters against Hosmi Mubarak's regime to get back to normal life. Sentiments are of course being communicated over every medium possible. “You know when you have so much to say that you’re unable to vocalize a single thought? That’s how #egypt feels now that we’re back online,” said Erika-Marie Wakid, a Twitter user in Cairo. Zeinobia, an Egyptian blogger, said via Twitter “They have cut our online connections but they managed to make us to connect on human level in the past week." |
