Facebook Rubbishes Symantec's Allegations

13 May, 2011, 2:46 pm IST | by Anuradha Shetty | Web services

Early this week we had reported about a blog posted by Symantec that had set the news bells ringing. Symantec had, on its blog, stated that the popular social networking platform was; by the way of its features like quizzes and other applications giving third party clients like advertisers and web analytics access to private data of the users like their photographs, and other profile details. The blog also asked users to change their passwords to avoid any such data breach.

Now, however, Facebook in an all defensive mood states that the report on the basis of which Symantec has built its slew of allegations is inaccurate. For starters, Facebook states that Symantec's claims of the private user data being leaked to third party clients lacks adequate evidence. It further added that the third party clients did receive access tokens, but they largely remained ignorant about the other 'uses' those access tokens could be put to.

Also, Facebook officials added that its developers and advertisers were bound by a strict contract which clearly defines the amount of data that can be shared, and what is the violation of the company's rules.
