Google easter eggs for Valentine's Day

11 Feb, 2012, 9:12 am IST | by Padmini Harchandrai | Web services

Google may or may not doodle on Valentine's Day, this year, but they've begun the festivities, already. An equation was discovered by Twitter user @Huckberry, which pulls up a graph on which the equation plots several functions. The result is a big blue heart. Go ahead and try it, the equation is:

sqrt(cos(x))*cos(300x)+sqrt(abs(x))-0.7)*(4-x*x)^0.01, sqrt(6-x^2), -sqrt(6-x^2) from -4.5 to 4.5

Copy paste that equation into the Google search window and you will get your big blue heart.

Google's heart is blue?

Google's heart is blue?

The equation, includes square roots, absolute values and cosines, which we learnt in school and college. You will also get an error message that says "The function might not be plotted correctly".  The equation was, of course, not written by Google, who have released various easter eggs from time to time. The other famous one that was also recent was "Do a barrel roll". When you typed "do a barrel roll" into Google and turned your instant search off, your screen would literally do a barrel roll, flipping around just like a phone with an accelerometer does.

Another fun one was Gravity. What you had to do for that one was type "Google Gravity" in the search bar. Then instead of regular search, you hit "I'm feeling lucky", if you have it enabled that is, and you would basically watch Google defy Newton (in a way). And then of course, there was the tribute to Chuck Norris, where if you typed his name in the search bar, and again, instead of performing a regular Google search, you hit, "I'm feeling lucky", you got a message from Google saying, "Google won't search for Chuck Norris because it knows you don't find Chuck Norris, he finds you." And in the suggestions section they add, "Run, before he finds you." That one almost called for a local Google tribute to our local Chuck Norris, Rajnikanth.

What do you think of the Valentine's Day easter egg? Any math enthusiasts out there have a way to explain how the functions plotted on the graph form a heart? Let us know in the comments section below.
