When you're chatting with someone on Google and you accidentally get disconnected, the messages you receive while you're offline are sent to your Google inbox. Chat logs from chats in the past could be viewed in the Gmail inbox, too. However, none of these services were available earlier, when you had to access Gmail via IMAP. The Google Data Liberation team have announced that Google finally has added support for downloading your recorded chat logs from IMAP. All the entries that you can see in your Gmail chats label will now be delivered to your local email client, if it is configured to use IMAP. Google chat has been liberated!
If you already use IMAP to synchronize your Gmail account to a local device and you want to enable the new chat export feature, what you have to do is click on the 'Show in IMAP' checkbox for Chats in the Labels tab of your Gmail settings. Since chat liberation has been requested by many users, both via Twitter and on the moderator page, Google's decided to dump their usual data liberation goofy videos and shoot a tutorial on how to set up and use the new feature.
