From the 1st of January, 2012 onwards, Google will start charging for its Maps API usage. According to the BBC, when more than the limit of 25,000 hits are made in a day, Google may start charging $4 (approx Rs.198) for every 1,000 hits over the limit. This change will likely affect 0.35 percent of the users. It will primarily affect travel agents, who use maps to describe tourist destinations to their customers. Google says they understand that developers need time to figure out what this change means for them and take appropriate action. However, Google's concern is that Maps as a venture remains viable even used by the highest volume for-profit websites. Google will charge but Apple might move on?
Interestingly, Apple has bought C3 Technologies, a company that specializes in building 3D maps. According to 9to5Mac, Apple has purchased the company with a very clear vision. More than just providing the option of maps in 3D on iOS devices, it is to remove the need to utilize the maps service of its competitor, Google. With the latest iOS devices being powered by A4 and A5 chips, the devices will certainly support 3D maps and this might very well be the future of iOS maps. |
