Google's warning Windows users of widespread malware in conjunction with using its search product. Google's engineers noticed some suspicious activity and worked with IT engineers of companies that have been affected by the problem. The malware reroutes traffic to Google and other sites through a proxy. It is unknown how much the malware does this. Google, of course, doesn't have the ability to detect viruses on users' computers, just suspicious activity on the network. They say that users should update their antivirus software and catch the malware. Google warns of malware
If your computer is affected, you will see a big yellow sign from Google on your computer saying, "Your computer appears to be infected. It appears that your computer is infected with software that intercepts your connection to Google and other sites". Google's Matt Cut says, "This is important: Google has been able to detect a large number of computers infected with a specific piece of malware. If you go to Google and do a search (any word will do) right now, check to see whether you get a “Your computer appears to be infected” warning at the top of the search results. If you see the message, you need to clean up the infection from your machine." |
