Indian domains on ICANN's list include .dabur, .Indians and .hdfc

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers released a list yesterday, which included all the domain names applied for by the May 30th deadline. The full list can be viewed here. While companies from the United States dominated the list, India featured a presence on the list as well. Bharti Airtel has applied for (surprise surprise) .airtel. There are other corporations too that have applied for top level domains in the name of the corporation itself. For instance, HDFC Bank Limited has applied for .hdfcbank, Housing Development and Finance Corporation has applied for .hdfc, Dabur India Limited has applied for .dabur and Star India Private Limited has applied for .star.

Other Indian companies requesting domains, include Nameshop for .idn, Reliance Industries for .reliance, .ril and .Indians. Infosys Limited has requested .infosys and .infy. Lupin Limited has applied for .lupin. Infibeam Incorporation Limited has applied for .ooo. DotPing Inc. has applied for .ping. Tata Sons Limited has applied for .tata and Tata Motors Ltd for .tatamotors. T V Sundaram Iyengar & Sons Limited has applied for .tvs. Regional languages, including Indian languages also made presence on the list. The Indian names in non-Roman script on the list, include (featured here in Roman): .com, .sangathan and .net.

ICANN revealed that there were 1,930 bids for 1,409 top level domains. The deadline for submitting applications for the top level domains was the 30th of May and the bulk of companies that met this deadline were from North America and Europe. 883 out of the 1,930 applications received were from the United States, alone. There were around 100 applications for top level domains in languages using lettering other than English, which includes Chinese, Arabic and Thai. Furthermore, 17 applications were from Africa and ICANN CEO Rod Beckstrom said that to have that many applications from Africa is encouraging, and that it is a significant expansion.
