Google unveiled its annual Zeitgeist for India, a report where they compile information on how their search engine was used in each country. The most searched for person on Google this year was, as expected, a Bollywood celebrity, Katrina Kaif. However, politics followed suit with Anna Hazare being the second most searched for Indian and one of the fastest rising searches this year. Following them was Salman Khan. The film he starred in this year, Bodyguard, was the most searched for film of the year while Shah Rukh Khan's Ra One took second place. The southern states got some representation with Mankatha and Dookudu being in the top ten list.
Most searched in 2011
Of course, cricket had representation with IPL and World Cup 2011 being the first and second most searched for events respectively in 2011. International people that ranked high on the Indian search lists included Steve Jobs, following his resignation as well as his passing, and Justin Bieber. Google says Bieber was searched for, "his music, love life and hairstyles."
Outside of entertainment, IBPS (Indian Banking Personnel Selection) was one of the fastest rising searches this year which demonstrates a growing interest in applying to government jobs online. Indian Railways was also a popular search term with users going online to look up schedules and book tickets. "Way2sms" was also a popular search term this year which shows Indian interest in using mobile technology to stay in communication with family and friends.
"2011 saw Indian Internet becoming mainstream - over 70% of search happened in non-metros, a lot of Internet usage moved to mobiles and we hit the 125 million users mark. And for the first time, the online world mirrored the sentiments of the aam admi, with Indians logging on to the net to share opinions, voice concerns, apart from searching for entertainment, edutainment and jobs,” says Lalitesh Katragadda, Country Head - India Products.
