.xxx Domain Name Added to the Domain Name System

Last month, there were stories about adult or porn websites ending with .xxx domain names. So it shouldn’t be much of a surprise that the controversial section of the web is now being offered domain names ending with .xxx.

After being approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the suffix has been officially added to the Domain Name System which means that porn sites will end with the special suffix .xxx. The first registered websites are porn.xxx, sex.xxx and xxx.xxx which are being used to promote sales of the domain.

Strangely, it seems that the porn industry itself has a problem with the addition of this new domain. It seems that many groups, organizations and countries will find it a lot easier to block pornographic material. Apparently, Saudi Arabia and (fortunately or unfortunately) India have already stood their ground and said that they will be blocking websites ending with .xxx.

On the other hand, the ICM Registry said “For individuals or families wishing to avoid adult content, the machine-readable labels will allow easy and reliable filtering. No need to fiddle with keywords or expensive software,” They also added that .xxx “will be a professionally run outfit” that will give users “greater confidence and certainty”.
