Techgoss.com reports that the HCL employee from Bangalore who was wrongly accused in the infamous Orkut-Shivaji case is suing the Maharashtra Government, the cops and AirTel to the tune of Rs. 200 million. Lakshmana Kailash spent 50 days in jail, including three weeks after the cops had picked up the (alleged) real perpetrators because Airtel apparently gave the Pune police an incorrect physical address. The police had been provided an IP address by Google (which owns Orkut.com)and asked the Internet Service Provider to map it to a physical address. The fact that Lakshmana was allegedly beaten in jail shows that Indian law enforcement's approach to technology-related investigation hasn't changed much from the ham-handed style in which our first ever cyber crime, more than half a decade ago, was handled.
