Troubled by allegations of misuse and of not reaching a crime scene on time, Delhi Police have decided to fix high-tech satellite guided tracking system in all its vehicles to track their movement. "We are installing global positioning system (GPS) in all police control room (PCR) vans so that they can be monitored round the clock and we can lessen the reaction time," said Karnal Singh, a joint commissioner of police in charge of the Special Cell. Singh is also a member of the technical committee set up to look into the modernization of the police force. There are around 400 PCR vans in the capital that are posted in different areas in the capital to maintain law and order. "We believe that by installing these devices, we will have better coordination among these vehicles because we can monitor their positions from the control room," said Singh. He said that a special control room would be set up at the police headquarters to monitor these vehicles. "We have issued tenders for this system and six domestic and foreign companies have come forward. We believe the work of installing this system should start in February next." "It would soon be functional," added Ajay Kumar, deputy commissioner at the police control room. He said the company installing the systems in the vehicles would also provide the required training in the use of GPS. The system, officials said, would also check any misuse of any official vehicle. "We would be able to know if the staff is misusing a vehicle or not patrolling in the specified areas," said Singh. Delhi Police would also add around 200 PCR vans before the 2010 Commonwealth Games. |
