Google released its Places application for Android a little while ago and have now brought the service to iOS. The search engine giant has partnered up with Hotpot to make an application that shows you which businesses are around you, as well as give you recommendations based on your ratings. The generic categories that come with the application are Restaurants, Coffee, Bars, ATMs, Gas Stations, Hotels, Attractions, Pizza and Post Office. You can even add more of your own categories, for instance, I added Fashion and Hospitals to the list. However, the information is only as accurate as the businesses themselves provide and we being in India, a lot of the information provided is a little outdated. From testing it out, what the application told me the closest ATM to my location is isn't the actual closest and doesn't even exist anymore. This is particularly useful when traveling and seeing local reviews for their own businesses. The application is available for free from the App Store and requires iOS 3.0 or later. It can be used on the iPhone, iPod Touch and the iPad. |
