Presenting TukTuk, A GPS Based Auto Fare Calculator

Apps to help prevent you getting cheated are all the rage right now it seems (of course, the question of why we're getting cheated is completely irrelevant. Completely). From applications like Meter Down and m4mum, to now Tuk Tuk (click to download), mobile apps for making your way around an Indian city are truly the way to generate profit. The latest one, TukTuk is pretty nifty. It uses your GPS positioning to calculate your route and your fare based on your route. Therefore, there are two ways you're safe from being cheated. One of course, is being told the wrong fare and the other is being safe from long, scenic, round-about journeys that taxi or rickshaw drivers might take you on.

Make your rickshaw go TukTuk

This application runs on Android, Blackberry and Symbian smartphone platforms. No love for iOS it seems. Christin Emmanuel George, co-founder and CEO of MindHelix Technologies, said, "It can be started as one enters the autorickshaw and the meter in the phone will run alongside the auto's metre. Using the GPS, it can double-check the distance travelled as shown in the auto and calculate the exact fare." He added, "The 'Tuk Tuk' meter does not require an internet connection or service provider. It functions even in remote areas. The application has a simple user interface that consists of a Start-Stop button and can be customised for any location by entering the fare details."

So hop on your phones you Android, Blackberry and Symbian users, and go through your day, cheated one less time!
