Mozilla has released an update for its Firefox browser, which patches a security flaw in the way the browser handles the FTP protocol. The bug which has a low security risk could be exploited to allow an attacker to remotely check out a machine for other flaws. Mozilla has already put out a security advisory for this bug, which specifies that the bug has to do with the way FTP protocol issues the PASV (passive) command. This command is used by Firefox, to request an alternate data port as well an alternative server address for file transfer if the need arises. This can be exploited, by using a specially-coded FTP server, which can exploit the bug to perform a simple one pass port-scan of machines. To obtain the patch, simply download the updated version of Firefox from Mozilla's website or use Firefox's inbuilt auto-update option. For more details please check out this report and advisory. |
