According to the grapevine, Internet retailer, Amazon.com will unveil its own online music download service next month. The service is likely to challenge Apple, as it plans to sell music with reduced protection against copyright infringement. News reports say the internet giant has approached all the music majors in the past fortnight and said that it wanted to sell unprotected MP3 songs in May as it tries to follow Apple in shaking up the music industry. However, it is not clear whether Amazon will be able to meet its deadline. Amazon has been unsuccessful, in the past 18 months to compete with iTunes, gaining little attention to its collection of free, unprotected music downloads. Also, plans to develop an Amazon-branded MP3 player were halted prematurely. The majority of music on Amazon's download store is likely to come from EMI and various independent labels. Amazon has not confirm any information about the MP3 download service yet, or whether its prices would undercut those charged by the iTunes Store. |
