Belgian Court Penalizes Google News

19 Sep, 2006, 4:00 pm IST | by Priyanka Pradhan | Windows

Google is in trouble again after the Brazilian legal fiasco. This time Google has been asked by a Belgian court to stop taking news content from French news papers on the net. The lawsuit, filed by Copiepresse, an organization which manages copyright for the Belgian French and German-speaking press sought a fine of 1 million Euros (674,000 million pounds) daily if Google did not comply with its demand.

Copiepress general secretary, Margaret Boribon told Reuters , "We are asking for Google to pay and seek our authorization to use our content. Google sells advertising and makes money on our content." She added that she will inform her European counterparts of the results of the court action and it was possible that similar actions could be taken elsewhere in Europe.

However, Google has responded by saying that the ruling was flawed and it intended to appeal against the ruling.
