| Bittorrent 4.20 , a.k.a Allegro has just been released with a new traffic caching feature, as part of BitTorrent's campaign to convince Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to stop blocking or throttling Peer to Peer (P2P) traffic. The Allegro addresses issues that ISPs have with the amount of traffic dedicated to the BitTorrent P2P network. The new feature called Cache Discovery Protocol caches popular download paths in internal network servers instead of relying on external servers which allows speeds to remain constant and is much cheaper for ISPs to operate with. The Cache Discovery Protocol comes to the rescue of ISPs who are concerned that the increasing use of P2P networks will increase costs for them. The ISPs have tried to combat the problem of BitTorrent protocol which hogs over 60% of bandwith, by cutting back the amount of available bandwith for users. Now the traffic caching feature aims to keep both, the ISPs and the users happy by cutting costs for the ISPs without compensating on bandwith for the users. Now that P2P networks have come under enormous pressure to shut down altogether (thanks to RIAA, MPAA and Co), BitTorrent Inc is trying hard to stay alive by pleasing the ISPs. |
