CES: Skype Debuts Wi-Fi Desktop Phones

09 Jan, 2007, 4:00 pm IST | by Priyanka Pradhan | Windows

VoIP software manufacturer, Skype has unveiled its desktop Internet phones, to give users, the ability to make internet calls without the use of a PC. The devices are aimed at enabling consumers and small business users to call other Skype users on mobile phones or landlines, via broadband Internet connections, in a more flexible manner.

The two new Skype desktop Internet phones announced at CES 2007 are Ipevo's Solo.1 and Topcom's Webt@lker 5000. The user interface on these new desktop Internet phones is similar to the Skype software interface on PCs and includes the same calling features. Both the phones are preloaded with Skype software and feature large, adjustable 2.4-inch color screens. Moreover, devices let users select, manage or add new contacts, as well as perform other contact list operations. Users without existing Skype accounts can also register for Skype through their device.

Eric Lagier, Director, Business Development, Hardware and Mobile says, "Skype users tell us that they want to put Skype to use in multiple ways, both at home and at work. With these new desktop Internet phones, consumers and small business users will have more flexibility to make Internet calls and enjoy the great Skype cost savings and sound quality without needing a computer to fire up Skype."

Apart from free Skype-to-Skype calls, these devices will include SkypeOut, SkypeIn and Skype Voicemail. Both phones will be available at the Skype web store in March 2007.
