China Opens Half-way House For Internet Addicts

One of the most dangerous trends that have developed in recent years has been the advent of online addiction. This is a growing trend that is no longer only applicable to first world nation blocs like Europe or the United States but is prevalent all over the world. It can be loosely defined as spending hours surfing the Net, chatting, playing online games etc. without taking a break or taking rest. It has lead to the growth of insomnia and has lead to people trying to escape realities of life by staying online. Therefore it comes as no surprise that support systems for such a dangerous addiction are beginning to spring up all over the world. China has just opened its first halfway house for Internet addicts, offering help to addicted teenagers. The shelter can hold four minors for one-night stays and help bridge gaps between children and parents, the Shanghai Daily has been quoted as saying. "None of the teenagers are forced to come here," the newspaper quoted Wang Hui, the house's chief social worker, as saying. "We wander around in nearby Internet bars at night and bring them to the halfway house if the teen agrees." It's a small step but it makes me happy to see preventive steps are being taken. China itself has taken notice of this fact and issued a whole bunch of laws designed to curb this growing menace.
