Hollywood Offers New Movies Online

03 Apr, 2006, 3:20 pm IST | by Sharon Khare | Windows

Hollywood studios will now start selling digital versions of films like "Brokeback Mountain" and "King Kong" on the Internet. Warner Bros., Universal Pictures, Sony Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox and MGM have said that sales of the movies would begin through download website Movielink; while Sony and Lionsgate have said that they will sell through the CinemaNow site. New films will be priced between $20 to $30 similar to DVDs; while older titles will sell for $10 to $20. Movielink will allow the films to be stored indefinitely on a computer hard drive or transferred to as many as two other computers. A copy can be burned to a DVD as a backup and the discs can be played on up three PCs authorized by Movielink but cannot be viewed on a standard DVD player. Consumers though will not be able to transfer the films from a PC or laptop to a handheld portable viewing device. With CinemaNow the arrangement is different. Films downloaded from CinemaNow will be playable on just one computer. The company said it eventually expects studios to allow consumers to burn movies on DVD and transfer them to portable devices. kingkong_t.jpg
