A new web based service, developed by IBM India Research Labs will now help Indians improve their English speaking skills via an interactive program online. The service is based on advanced speech processing techniques, which was initially developed for a leading Indian call center but is now available for individuals, schools and businesses in the country. Dr. Ashish Verma, a researcher at IBM India Lab said, "Globalization is a significant driver, and I hope this technology can help develop the language skills that are absolutely necessary for individuals, company, region and country to compete in a global labor market." The technology evaluates English speaking skills of users on grammar, pronunciation, comprehension and other spoken-language skills, using specially-adapted speech recognition. The evaluations help identify areas for improvement by highlighting shortcomings and providing examples of correct pronunciation and grammar. Primarily, the program aims to neutralize the regional Indian accent to make it clear, with the help of a game-like tool on the web. |
