| Major Indian railway stations are all set to get wired to the Internet, courtesy VSNL (Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited), which has just set up the first internet kiosk at Bangalore Central Railway station. The Union Railway minister, Laloo Prasad Yadav has outlined the project in the Railway Budget 2006-07, giving VSNL exclusive franchisee rights for running cyber cafes at 68 different locations on Indian railway stations. Shashi Kalathil, president of broadband and retail business, VSNL, said that the company is keen on making Internet easily available, so that passengers can stay connected on the move. The 68 outlets will be launched shortly, each equipped with 10 to 20 high end multimedia PCs and will be accessible 24/7 for internet browsing and even gaming. All Tata Indicom dial-up Internet and broadband subscribers will be able to access this facility by using their existing accounts but the service will be accessible to others too. Moreover, VSNL plans to offer services such as printing, scanning, mobile charging, and CD writing through these cafes. Passengers can also make international calls through Voice over Internet Protocol ( VoIP) at affordable rates. Tata Indicom is also looking to create Wi-Fi enabled areas on the stations for passengers who would like to use their laptops or other Wi- Fi enabled devices. Do we hear fewer complaints about trains running late already? |
