Kerala to Unveil 'Traditional Knowledge' Portal

01 Feb, 2007, 5:35 pm IST | by IANS | Windows

Traditional knowledge and information on grassroots innovations will be just a click away when the Kerala State IT Mission launches its portal this month.

The Kerala Innovation Foundation's move aims to reduce erosion of knowledge and protect available knowledge and practices in sectors like herbal medicine, agriculture, animal husbandry, food, environment protection and culture.

The program will also include a state-level register of biodiversity and geographical indicators, IT Mission coordinator V.R. Ajithkumar said.

"As the first step to this, we would run a pilot program to digitize the traditional knowledge and grassroots innovation of Malappuram district in February," Ajithkumar told IANS.

Malappuram has been chosen for its spectacular success in a computer literacy project - the Akshaya IT program.

"The campaign would be undertaken with the help of local self-governments," he added.

The program will document the entire resources of every local body so as to aid upcoming entrepreneurs.

"We aim to create a knowledge network that can empower innovators, recognize and augment contemporary innovations and facilitate diffusion of grassroots innovations through commercial and non-commercial channels," said Ajithkumar.

The IT Mission is organizing a one-day workshop Feb 7 here when experts from various sectors will discuss the program.
