Microsoft has sued an anonymous hacker, known online as 'Viodentia', for having allowed people to copy digital movies and songs off Window's Media Player (WMP) using a free program called FairUse4WM. The hacker's program managed to bypass the Digital Rights Management (DRM) protection built into WMP, illegally obtaining propriety source code to produce the program. Microsoft's lawsuit stated that FairUse4WM enables users to alter or remove Microsoft's DRM from Windows Media files, allowing users to wrongfully access or copy a copyrighted music or movie file. It seeks a permanent injunction as well as unspecified compensatory and punitive damages from the hacker. The anonymous hacker, Viodentia clarified in a Web posting, that the program has never involved Microsoft source code. While Microsoft could not immediately be reached for comment, a legal expert said he viewed the lawsuit as a way for the company to slow distribution of the program and preventing would-be users from taking advantage of it to duplicate copyrighted content.
