| After numerous protests by US citizens and a $30 million lawsuit against it, MySpace has finally decided to incorporate more age restrictions on the site which aim to make it more difficult for adults to befriend minors. Myspace users above 18 years of age, can no longer be added on to a minor's contact list unless they already know the full name and email address of the minor. In addition, MySpace has now given its members an option to be contacted only by persons in the same age group. The site is also revising its advertisement policy to keep children away from advertisements for gambling, dating and other adult activities. The announcement to tighten restrictions comes along with NewsCorp's decision to expand the social networking site to European and Asian countries. Chris DeWolfe, co-founder and chief executive of MySpace, said 11 countries, including France and Germany have been marked for expansion. China and India are in the run up for expansion in the future. MySpace is being severely criticized even after the new restriction on grounds that there's no way to verify the identity of the users. Nevertheless, NewsCorp, the parent company is going ahead with expansion plans, tying up with mobile network operators and even coming up with foreign language versions of the site. |
