In a bid to 'educate' the concerned parents of kids using social networking sites, Myspace has launched a campaign in partnership with youth magazine, Seventeen, the National School Boards Association and the National Association of Independent Schools to tip parents on how to protect minors online. MySpace has added a 'Safety Tips' tab on the homepage, for parents to download the guide. In addition, MySpace also plans to distribute brochures among 55,000 schools in the US, representing grades 7 through 12 in October. NewsCorp's MySpace has been in the news for exploitation of children, racism and child predators. Moreover, MySpace has also been used as platform for personal vendetta by teens who have created obscene pages with photographs of their professors and other authorities on the site. MySpace, on the other hand, has always maintained that it is not their sole responsibility to patrol the site and that parents should take active part in supervising children. The campaign to educate parents on safety tips can only be looked upon as 'damage control' of sorts for the social networking site, after media reports have tarnished its reputation to a great extent in the past few months.
