Researchers at the University of California say social networking websites such as Facebook and MySpace are increasingly splitting users along class lines. The six month study on American users has shown that Facebook users come from wealthier homes and are more likely to attend college, while MySpace users tend to get a job after finishing high school rather than continue their education. Another conclusion made by the study is that typical Facebook users are primarily white, but not exclusively, while MySpace, is home for Latino and Hispanic teens, immigrant teens as well as "other kids who didn't play into the dominant high school popularity paradigm". The research finds that MySpace has most of the kids who are seen as are 'geeks', 'freaks', or 'queers'. Danah Boyd, a researcher at the University of California and internet sociologist also points out that the US military's recent decision to ban personnel from using sites including MySpace shows social distinctions in the armed forces. This is because Myspce was banned while Facebook was not. She says there's a division, even in the military as Soldiers are on MySpace while officers are on Facebook. Evidence, collected through a series of interviews with US teenagers using MySpace and Facebook over the past nine months, showed there was a clear gap between the populations of each site. Also, the researchers clarify that defining 'class' in the US was difficult because, unlike many other nations, it did not map directly to income. Class in the US was more about social networks that are strongly connected to geography, race, and religion; these are also huge factors in lifestyle divisions and thus 'class'. Read more here. |
