Universal Music Group (UMG) has sued two online video sharing sites—Sony’s Grouper and Bolt—accusing them of copyright infringement. The record label claims that the two sites have actively participated in the infringement by copying, reformatting, distributing and creating derivative works from Universal's musicians. It says that a simple search of Grouper's website, reveals a number of illegal Mariah Carey videos available for download. UMG is seeking damages up to as much as $150,000 for each incident of copyright infringement plus costs. Universal, whose artists include U2, Mary J Blige and Mariah Carey estimates that thousands of music videos were being viewed on the two sites, to their benefit alone. Bolt chief executive and co-founder Aaron Cohen told Reuters, "There's no question that people upload copyrighted content from time to time and occasionally we receive official notices to remove content and we do, "Universal says it has retained the right to add Sony Pictures, which bought Grouper for $65m (£34m) in August, as a defendant at a later date.
