Whopping Increase In Cyber Crimes In Delhi

07 Mar, 2007, 12:52 pm IST | by IANS | Windows

There was a whopping 255 percent increase in the number of complaints related to cyber crimes last year over the previous year, according to a report commissioned by the cyber cell of the Delhi Police.

The cell, which is under the Economic Offenses Wing of Delhi Police, received 206 complaints last year against only 58 in 2005. It was constituted in 2000 to fight the rising incidence of cyber crimes.

A total of 17 cases related to hacking, obscenity, e-commerce fraud (online share trading, credit card fraud), Internet-related (copyright violation and misrepresentation on the Internet) crimes were registered last year.

This was against 12 cases registered in 2005, indicating a 42 percent rise.

"Though new technologies are coming up, people find them easy which are proving to be a nightmare for us," a cyber cell official told IANS.

"Though we have got all the facilities to check the menace, it is very difficult to put a control on it as the investigation process takes a lot of time," he added.

According to the report, police identified 14 types of modus operandi used by the offenders last year, a 100 percent jump in the complexities as only seven were identified in 2005.

"To combat cyber crimes, we need to train cops at the level of constables and it should be made an integral part of police training," an official said.

Police have established two cyber labs in south Delhi - Malviya Nagar and Lodhi Colony.

Last month an airhostess had her nude profile posted on Orkut, a public sharing domain, by unknown people who are still to be traced.
