Windows 8 to have faster boot times

09 Sep, 2011, 11:31 am IST | by Rossi Fernandes | Windows

Microsoft has been busy updating the Building Windows 8 Blog that they started a few weeks back. One of the updates posted are to do with the bootup process for the Windows 8 operating system. Data collected by Microsoft shows that a lot of users prefer to shut down Windows completely over putting their PCs into sleep mode and even hibernation. It might have something to do with people’s preference of totally shutting down their PCs, so that no power is consumed. Resuming session from a hibernate takes a little longer, too. Microsoft chose to add the features of hibernate and cold booting to get the best of both worlds into Windows 8.

The plan is to have a setup that uses no power and fast bootup times. One of the things Microsoft is doing to speed up shutdown and resuming is to not close kernel sesions, but simply hibernate it. The result is a smaller hibernate file, which means it takes less time to write the data to disk and read from it. Use of SSDs is also recommended as the performance improvement noticed on systems running them should be when Microsoft says that they’re also working on new techniques to try and reduce the number of reboots required by users while installing patches and other software.
