Spring Xbox 360 Dashboard Update Makes Life Difficult for Pirates

| by tech2 News Staff | Xbox 360

We told you a couple of weeks ago about Microsoft preparing to release the Spring Update to the Xbox 360 Dashboard on May 19. The update comes with PayPal support and the ability to read a new disc format as well.

Now harder to pirate

Apart from that though, the update also makes life difficult for pirates who use a modded Xbox 360. Not only does the update flash the console to the new dashboard version, it also flashes the DVD drive back to the original firmware because of the need to support a new disc format. This makes the console lose the ability to read pirated discs, and modding is a generally cumbersome process for the Xbox 360, so the pirates are bound to lose some sleep over this.

However, it seems they have already come up with a countermeasure for this problem, despite rumours that Microsoft will be able to detect modded consoles immediately following this update. When that countermeasure comes it is anyone’s guess, but a console ban is the least you should expect if you mod your console.
